In simple words, civil engineers are concerned with making the environment look more beautiful and creating ease for the people living in an area. They plan, design, and then construct different structures and infrastructure such as roads, railways, dams, irrigation projects, powerhouses, and sewage systems to facilitate the people living there and provide them with a shared sense of living.   • Use of computer software

  • Doing calculations

The civil engineers’ job may rely on their plans, but all these plans have calculations. Everything is measured and then is planned accordingly. So if you want to become a successful civil engineer, it is essential that you are good at maths and can do severe calculations with a nominal error rate.   • Problem-solving

Problem-solving is a significant skill that they do need to possess. Since they are working on the site, there are instances when the workers fight among themselves, or the materials’ supply is less. The civil engineer present at the site must find the possible solution for the problem they are facing. 

Having good problem-solving skills can help improve the situation better and prevent it from aggravating, affecting the project’s result.

Civil engineering is a broad field that encompasses a lot of sub disciplines. There are general civil engineers and specialized civil engineers who work together on a project related to water supply, drainage, pavement, dams, communication supply, and many others. General civil engineers are also referred to as site engineers who focus on doing many different chores when on site. They are involved in attending meetings with stakeholders, visiting the site, and creating construction plans. They apply the knowledge of geotechnical, structural, transportation, and constructional engineering to various sizes and types of projects when working. 

Some of the significant sub-disciplines of engineering include:

Construction Engineering

Construction engineering deals with the planning and execution of the plans. It also involves responsibilities regarding the transportation of materials from one place to the project site. They are too focused on site development regarding environmental, hydraulic, and geotechnical engineering. They also have some additional duties that are equally important, like the drafting and reviewing contracts, the logistical operations, and ensuring that all the material required is present and more is provided if necessary.  

Environmental Engineering

Another term for environmental engineering is sanitary engineering. However, engineers cover hazardous waste management and environmental remediation work, and some engineers have this work assigned separately to them. 

Environmental engineers’ work is more concerned with treating the different kinds of wastes like the chemical, thermal, biological, and purification of water and air and avoid the contamination of water and air with the disposed waste. The environmental engineers also look after pollutant transport, water purification, air pollution, water pollution, recycling, and hazardous waste management. Environmental engineers also have to protect groundwater and ensure that it is protected from pollution due to the construction. They also have the duty of making reports which are supposed to be detailed about the effects of pollution on the environment at the end of every project. 

Geotechnical Engineering

Engineers who specifically read about rocks and soils are known as geotechnical engineers. During the construction of a project, soil science, material science, hydraulics, and mechanics are combined and applied to design safe foundations, walls, and other structures present in the plan. 

Geotechnical engineers show particular concern about the soil, but it is challenging to predict soil behavior, which means that their job is equally challenging. Therefore, geotechnical engineering continuously works with geologists and soil scientists to ensure that they are doing their job right.
